Quite possibly one of the most amazonic mainstream movie ever made. Definitely the most amazonic Indian movie ever made. I mean, how often have you seen a movie where a six foot plus tall woman carries a an adult tiger on her shoulders? There are many, many amazonic scenes like this in the movie. And did I mention that the sexy amazon is clad in tiny loincloth throughout the movie? Read on! The story is about a rich man who loses his daughter, Rani, in the jungle. Rani grows up in the jungle and becomes a big strapping girl with enormous strength who stands almost a foot taller than everyone in the movie and effortlessly lifts guys over her shoulders. The role was played by a vollyball player called Jamuna who supposedly stood 6’2″, which is extremely tall by Indian standards, especially considering the movie was made in 1988.
The director starts out by showing that she is stronger than both a bear and a python! A big bear is being strangled by a python. Our amazon comes in, grabs the python and starts wrestling with it in a river. The poor python is no match for the super strong amazon who practically tears the python up and throws it aside, thereby rescuing the bear! Some great shots of her strong arms and insanely long legs in this scene! It doesn’t take very long after that for the amazon to fight other natives in the jungle. Except they are nowhere as big and tall as her. In fact, most of them are half her size and barely reach up to her chest. When she notices that a group of them are trying to kill a tiger, she goes into action. She pulverizes the guys, even though they are armed with spears. In one scene, she grabs a guy’s spear and breaks it with her hands much to his horror! She then picks up the biggest guy in the group, holds him by his legs and swings him around like a pole. She uses him like a weapon as he hits the other guys while she is swinging him, which sends them flying. There is a great shot of her strong arms and thighs at the end of the scene when she’s in the process of tossing the guy. Then she goes after another native. She hoists the poor guy way over her head with utmost ease. She holds him there for a while as if to prove a point about her strength! The other guys look on in horror as their compatriot looks helpless and scared being held high up in the air by this superhuman woman! She then spins him around several times up in the air and throws him away with brute strength. The hardest part for the amazon is not carrying the little guys. That she does with effortless ease. The hard part is that she has to bend down from her 6’2″ frame to fight the guys, most of whom are a foot or more shorter than her. The director delights the audience here with several extreme height comparison scenes! Now the director goes on to show that the sexy amazon is stronger than 5 guys put together! In this scene, 5 guys struggle to lift her up. As they are unable to lift her, they try another strategy to overpower her. Two guys hold her left arm while two others hold her right arm. A fifth guy tries to hold on to her leg. The five of them together try to bring her down, but to no avail. The big amazon swings the four guys clinging to her arms around as though they were little kids! She kicks the guy holding on to her guy, which sends him flying. After spinning the four guys around a couple of times, she wrestles them to the ground! In the next scene, the male actor, who has been sent to the forest to find Rani, is attacked by the jungle natives and is wounded. The amazon carries him to a river (they don’t show the carry) and nurses him so he becomes healthy. Predictably, they fall in love. This was the only shortcoming in the film. The male character is as big and tall as the amazon. I wish the director had found a short and puny actor to play the role, and perhaps had the amazon carry him everywhere on her shoulders. Going by her height and strength, she could easily carry a guy around on her shoulders for an extended period of time. That would have been perfect, but the movie soon returns to its amazonic glory! There are several references in the movie to her height and physique. The male character, who has a lot of intimate scenes with the amazon, stares at her while she’s sleeping. He is shocked at how long her legs are! He then takes her foot in his hand and admires its size. He does the same with her hands. The director was clearly an amazon woman lover! This is followed by an extreme height comparison scene featuring the most amazonic dialog! Two little guys, who belong to a group of poachers, are walking in the forest. They come across a cobra, which makes them drop to the ground. The next minute, the amazon arrives, picks up the cobra and tosses it aside! The guys then look up to see the tallest thing they’ve ever seen! You can see the way one of the guys looks up at the amazon in utter shock! It is almost like he can’t believe anyone could be that big and tall! The other guy meanwhile looks up at her never ending legs! And this is what he has to say “Are these legs or is this a TV tower? What height! What strength! I’ve seen this in an english movie. This is Tarzan!”. He then proceeds to check if the legs are for real by rubbing his hands all around the amazon’s thighs. As both of them get up, the height/size difference between them and the big amazon is startling! One of the guys then tries to touch her again to see if she is real, but she slaps him!
Then comes the most amazonic scene in the movie, and that’s saying a lot! Two jungle natives strike her pet tiger with a poisoned spear. The amazon comes to the tiger’s rescue. She hoists the tiger on to her shoulders and carries it a good distance. I’ve watched the scene many times, and it looks real to me. They show full frontal shots of the amazon with the tiger sitting on her shoulders and moving around. It doesn’t appear to be a full grown tiger, but must weigh 250 lbs, at least. To carry a beast like that on one’s shoulders takes enormous strength. And the amazon has it! As she is tending to the tiger, one of the guys comes from behind to attack her with a spear! She snatches the spear from him, holds his left arm, then bends down and much to his dismay, she suddenly lifts the guy up six feet in the air and on to her shoulders. The poor guy can be heard pleading to her as he is wrapped around her shoulders. The amazon then uses her broad shoulders to break the guy’s back and drops his limp body on the ground! She then yells a loud Tarzan like cry, which scares the other guy and brings him tumbling down the hill! The amazon’s lover then gets attacked by a giant. This huge man tears the amazon’s lover to shreds and nearly kills him. This sends the amazon into a rage. She beats the giant up badly, displaying how incredibly strong she is. In one scene, the giant lunges at her, but she stops him with one hand. She proceeds to physically dominate him. This is the same giant who was mauling her lover a few minutes ago. She finally steps on the giant and kills him and rescues her lover once again! When she finds that the giant was sent by the poachers to hurt her lover, she goes on a rampage. She hunts down the poachers and beats them up very badly. She first targets the two little guys she met earlier. Holding a guy in each arm, she lifts the guy on her right with one hand and throws him up a tree (probably a fake!). The guy on the left (the littler of the two) is frightened and starts shivering and sobbing like a baby! She holds his small body with her right hand and crushes him with her left hand. She then lifts him up with one hand up in the air until he’s eye level with her, holding him there for a second or two with just one hand. Without using her other hand, she then lifts him up even more and tosses him back into the same tree where he joins his friend! Then she goes after the others with such rage and ferocity that before they knew what hit them, they all get crushed like tin cans! Lots of overhead lifts and carries and height comparisons in the scene! My favorite part here is when one of the smallish guys decides to climb on to her back. Clinging to her shoulders and wrapping himself all around her back, he refuses to get down. The amazon shakes him off her back, then picks him from the ground and tosses him over her head and sends him crashing on to the other side! Elephants then arrive and a melee ensues. Two really tiny guys, barely reaching up to her waist, rush into her with spears. She grabs the spears again and breaks them, this time two at the same time, before crushing the guys. She then predictably reunites with her parents and the movie ends. But the lasting image is that of the towering amazon who yells the Tarzan yell, swings her 6’2″ frame around trees and vines, lifts and carries guys considerably smaller than her and carries an adult tiger on her broad shoulders!
